Jan Opletal Halls of Residence – Construction Project of Two New Student Dormitory Blocks

The project aim is to build two modern accommodation blocks that will significantly expand the capacity of available student housing – specifically by 663 beds. The investment is being carried out with financial support from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, the Moravian-Silesian Region, the Statutory City of Ostrava, the National Development Bank, and the European Union.

The construction project responds to the long-term shortage of student dormitories in the region. At present, the University of Ostrava has only 518 beds, mainly in double and triple rooms with shared sanitary facilities. This represents only about 5 % of the total number of students, even though up to 30 % of them come from other parts of the Czech Republic.

Students will have access to modern double rooms with private bathrooms, including barrier-free and family-friendly variants. All rooms will be equipped with a desk and office chair, a bed, a wardrobe, and wall shelves, as well as a kitchenette with a fridge, microwave, and electric kettle. Each floor will also include small common areas and shared kitchens. The new dormitories will further offer study rooms, social spaces, a gym/fitness hall, laundry facilities, and a rooftop terrace. The project will feature underground car park.

The buildings will meet strict ecological and energy standards – they will be equipped with ground-source heat pump systems, rooftop photovoltaic panels, and a system for rainwater collection and reuse. The project emphasizes energy efficiency and sustainability, significantly reducing its ecological footprint.

Construction began in June 2025, with completion and final approval scheduled for June 2027. The new dormitories will welcome their first residents with the start of the academic year in September 2027.

The planned investment in the new dormitory blocks, including interior furnishings, exceeds CZK 700 million (excl. VAT).
